Think a Chevy Volt’s a slow, boring electric car to drive? Think again.

The Chevy Volt was part of a cool collection of electric cars that were featured at last weeks Electric Vehicles Street Fair, held next to the San Francisco Public Library on a sunny and warm, but really windy Saturday.

Called “The Future is Electric: Plug In and Get There” and sponsored by the California Center for Sustainable Energy, SF Environment and The San Francisco Clean Cities Coalition, the event was free, and lunch was provided for workshop registrants. On top of the Chevy Volt, they had the Nissan Leaf, BMW ActiveE and the Ford Focus.

The event is important because the CCSE is trying to get the word out about its new financial assistance program for those planning to buy an electric car.

California is the nation’s largest PEV market with roughly 35 percent of the U.S. total.

During the fourth quarter 2012, sales of PEVs in California reached a record-setting 2.5 percent of all new cars purchased or leased in the state.

As you can see in the video, Colin Santulli a California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) transportation program manager, was our guide and (thanks to my training) in-car camera person.

CCSE administers the statewide Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, a program of the California Air Resources Board. Since 2010, CCSE has issued more than $42 million in vehicle incentives and helped to educate Californians on the availability and benefits of zero-emission vehicles.

Let me say I want a Chevy Volt, even if it’s just for the weekend. It’s not just manueverable and quick to speed, it feels great to drive from a view perspective. There was a great “command level” position at the wheel.

Stay tuned.
