On Saturday, 100 volunteers from Recology, the employee-owned recycling company, added compost made from food scraps collected at Oakland restaurants to Hoover’s sustainable garden and plant trees and other landscaping in support of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiative at Hoover Elementary School here in Oakland.

Consistent with the Recology “WASTE ZERO” rallying cry, volunteers will used recycled and reclaimed material to build benches, create pathways and revitalize the soil with nutrient-rich compost and mulch.
