Today, Lionsgate released the much-anticipated trailer for The Hunger Games. Unlike the teaser trailer that debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards this past August which barely whet our appetites for the movie, this full trailer gives us a much deeper look at Katniss’s path to the games.

As a recent fan of the book series, I couldn’t be happier with the trailer. Though it only shows scenes from the first half of the movie, it does paint a nice picture of the movie to come. Director Gary Ross appears to be faithful to the book thus far.

I really hope that The Hunger Games does not get twisted in the media as something Twilight-esque, as it bears next to no resemblance (other than the ages of the characters.) Katniss Everdeen would be a great follow up to Hermione Granger (of Harry Potter) as a strong, smart, young female protagonist. I do wonder, however, about the rating of the movie. As Katniss states in the trailer “There’s 24 of us, Gale. Only 1 comes out.” The games themselves are very violent and filled with death. I’m not a gore-junkie but I hope that these scenes are not glossed over for a PG-13 rating.

The new official trailer is viewable on YouTube. The Hunger Games is set to be released on March 23rd, 2012.
